The objective of this mask is twofold. Not only does it provide cooling properties to keep you horse comfortable, but it also prevents insect-induced head tossing, caused by the increased exposure to flies.  This style mask has ear coverings for the horse with the back half in cooling fabric,  and the front half in mesh for better air circulation.
